James Byrne: with excerpts from an interview with the artist by Lisa Lyons
Studio International, June 1976, v. 191, no. 981, p. 230
With a painting and sculpture background, Byrne links formal concerns with phenomenological aspects of dance, movement and body art. Recent video works involve taped performances in which the artists body is used as a tool to define space. The work the Byrne discusses is Floor, Celling, in which the artist swings from a beam in his studio space, slowly defining the imaginary parameters of a small area of the studio, continually relating back to images of himself.
