Concentration-Container-Assimilation
Avalanche, Fall 1972, no. 6, pp. 53-61
Vito Acconci describes his performances and performances-for-video done in 1971 in the United States and Germany, both as a solo artist and in partnership with artists Doug Waterman and Kathy Dillon. He describes, in the first person, the experience of performing the pieces, often including emotions and motivations. Of paticular interest is Claim, wherein Acconci sits in a basement, blindfolded, with a weapon, while at street level a TV monitor shows his activity to passersby, who may choose to enter his space. In Remote Control, Acconci and Kathy Dillon sit in separate boxes, monitering each other on video screens, while Dillon pulls a rope around herself at Acconci's direction.
