Toronto: Art Gallery of York University and Art Gallery of Windsor, 1996
This is the catalogue of an exhibition of work by Jamelie Hassan, that was mounted at the Art Gallery of York University and the Art Gallery of Windsor in 1996. In addition to documentation of Hassan's work, the catalogue reprints an excerpt from a talk between the artist and theorist Homi K. Bhabha that occured before, and inspired, this exhibition. Hassan deals with many themes which overlap with Bhabha's theories. She uses cross-cultural and transhistorical references, addresses representations of the past in the present, as well as the notion of a "third space" where different cultures intersect. Hassan also explores aspects of language, narrative, translation, and the convergence of intimate journals with public archives.
