The Arts for Television
Los Angeles and Amsterdam: The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 1987
The Arts for Television examines television as a form for contemporary art making. The exhibition documents the crossovers and collaborations that take place on television, between and among dancers, musicians, playwrights, actors, authors, poets, and visual and video artists. The programme is divided into six categories: dance, music, theatre, literature, the video image, and works that are not necessarily for television but which address the usual content of TV and transform it. The exhibit also documents the involvement of television stations in Europe and America with art and artists/ video. Included are works by Nam June Paik, Charles Atlas, Laurie Anderson, Joan Logue, Robert Longo, Robert Ashley, Peter Greenaway, Marina Abramovic, Ulay, Bill Viola, Richard Serra, General Idea, and dozens more.
