Daunting Inferno

by Zeinabu Irene Davis

Afterimage, Summer 1993, v. 21, no. 1, p. 1

A positive review of O. Funmilayo Makarah's video installation, Fired Up, which was displayed at the California Afro-American Museum, Los Angeles, from October 1992 to July 1993. Makarah's piece, in the words of the artist, "invites the viewer to experience, contribute, and contemplate the experiences that culminated in the L.A. rebellion of 1992," referring to the events that occured following the acquittal of four police officers who were involved in the beating of Rodney King. Makarah recreates a dining room, where the walls are covered with quotations, newspaper articles, and expensive brand-name food products, while television monitors are set up like dinner guests, separated by a table. Two screens show footage of L.A. news coverage of the events, while the other two screens show interviews with viewers from all over the country. The piece addresses the racism of the media coverage, as well as the issues of poverty and access to media production and self-representation in marginalized communities, particularly the African-American communities of Los Angeles.
