Jail Sell

by Cynthia Wiggins

Afterimage, Oct. 1994, v. 22, no. 3, pp. 10-11

A critical review of Dawn Dedeaux's video and photography installation, Soul Shadows: Urban Warrior Myths, which was displayed in New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Rochester in 1993. The subjects of the piece are incarcerated juveniles, adults, and gang members, and are mostly black men. The author Cynthia Wiggins questions the choices and motivations of Dedeaux, a white woman, arguing that the artist does not properly take into account the subjectivity of the young men, and that her racialized representations are problematic.
