The SFMOMA builds a new theatre that supports 35mm, 16mm, multimedia and laserdisk. This new theatre is also the screening location for the musem's "Art in Cinema" series. The film program is supported mainly by a single large private donation by the Susan Wilberg Morganstein Memorial Fund. In turn, this raises the issue that "large, flashy and prestigious civic projects are certain to draw philanthropic support. However, smaller, community-based organizatons with less marquee value may have a more difficult to procure funding." (5) Valerie Soe raises the concern that the private sector may not equally fund smaller community projects and high-profile art projects.
