Paikvision
Artforum, Oct. 1982, v. 21, no. 2, pp. 52-55
Bruce Kurtz provides a critical discussion of Nam June Paik's body of work up until 1982, including a brief biography. Kurtz provides an in depth description of Paik's 1982 retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and it's catalogue. He describes the four main characteristics of Paik's work from 1959-1982 as follows; "[Paik] structures most of them [his works]...as sequences of events in time...he frequenly employs puns...he often alters the image-making aparatus...and he constantly changes and reworks his art..."(Kurtz, 53). He discusses Paik's influences including Fluxus, Zen buddhist riddles, and Marcel Duchamp, as well as some of his tendencies in using water. Kurtz acknowledges Paik's dependency on his medium, and acknowledges Paik's importance to the development of video art; he closes by calling Paik a major artist.
