Computer Sculpture:: Six Levels of Cybernetics

by Robert Mallary

Artforum, May 1969, v. 7, no. 9, pp. 29-35

Mallary summarizes connections between the fields of sculpture and cybernetics, describing a number of systems that can be used to produce sculptural objects using a range of computer programs and cybernetic devices. The article frames the contemporary applications of cybernetic systems by referring back to the initial use of such systems by composers; in the creation of light-and-sound environments; computer graphics; and finally application of such systems in the design of sculptures. There is an extended discussion of the computer sculpture program TRAN2. Mallary concludes by describing the capabilities of what he imagines will be a "truly advanced computer sculpture system." He describes six stages of progress for the development of cybernetic sculpture.
