Great Expectations:: Artists' TV Guide

by Robin White

Artforum, June Summer 1982, v. 20, no. 10, pp. 40-47

From an analysis of Jaime Davidovich's The Live Show to a detailed account of Mitchell Kriegman's brief stint on Saturday Night Live, Robin White provides a well-balanced idea of the various motivations and approaches producers and directors take in creating television shows. White brings to light the effect television has on society, whether we watch it or not, as well as how television is used as a vehicle for representing each artist's view of how our culture should progress. A brief history of the creation of cable is presented to reinforce the idea that television is meant to be accessible due to its influence on the formation of societal views. Quotes and general facts about the histories of several television series' emphasize the varying modes employed in forming the media and the ways in which artists manipulate content to inform context.
