"Unheimlich" Maneuvers: The Genres and Genders of Transsexual Documentary
The Velvet Light Trap, Spring 1998, no. 41, pp. 47-61
Beginning with an analysis of patriarchal structures, Christie Milliken addresses the ideas that influence varying viewpoints on male-to-female and female-to-male (FTM)transsexuals. The cultural implications that have given rise to the visibility of FTM sexuality are assessed followed by a deconstruction of the issues questioned in specific works by Annie Sprinkle, Monica Treut, and Alisa Lebow. The article brings to light problems in discussions of transgender identities such as how gender stereotypes are formed and the ways in which language is limiting to identification. Transgender activists take on the means to remedy these issues.
