Carry a Big Shtick
ARTnews, Sept. 2008, v. 107, no. 8, pp. 128-131
A look at artists utilizing sketch comedy and comic personae in their live and video performances. The humour in their work is viewed as one strategy for exploring political themes, and for making complicated issues around race, sexuality, culture, gender more engaging for audiences. Several recent, international video works are discussed, as are the benefits of a lo-fi aesthetic (a distinguishing feature of certain types of performance video), and the differences between art sketch and late-night television sketch comedy.
