Man Standing: Zacharias Kunuk brings contemporary relevance to Inuit tradition
Canadian Art, Fall 2011, pp. 130-135
In his new film "Qapirangajuq: Inui Knowledge and Climate Change," Inuit filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk has Inuit elders talk about the landscape and allows them to speak on their own experiences of climate change through their observations of the elements that they have been watching their entire lives. This work is telling for its conspicuous lack of the usual voices of scientific expertise, no biologists or meteorologists here, just the voices of those who have seen the changes. Kunuk's film situates the changing climate in a discussion that is cultural, historical, and a specifically Northern point of view.
