Performing the State of Exception: Coco Fusco's Operation Atropos and A Room of One's Own
TDR: The Drama Review, 2008, v. 52, no. 1, pp. 136-139
Coco Fusco's video "Operation Atropos" and performance "A Room of One's Own" are both responses to the Bush administration's performance of power. They are counter-performances that reject the dominant national performance of power in the U.S. as the "state of exception," not through a denunciation, but through a hijacking of it which serves to denaturalize the government's ideological camouflage. The performance and the video also interrogate the military logic of gender, acting as a feminist commentary on the global status of women.
