AIDS: A War on Representation
Local Film Cultures, Feb. 2014
Author Naz Altan details the history of AIDS, particularly as it emerged in Canadian consciousness in the 1980s, along with the media artists who, in tandem with the New Queer Cinema, addressed the crisis, largely ignored by the mainstream media. Altan discusses AIDS activism video productions and highlights the work of filmmaker John Greyson, part of the "Toronto New Wave" of filmmakers in the 1980s, whose own work explored issues of AIDS, gender, sexuality and imperialism.
