Defining an Identity in Art
Global Times, Dec. 24, 2013
A review of Nilbar Gures self-acted video piece, entitled, Undressing (2006), which shows Gures removing layers of headscarves, a symbol of Islam for many people, offering the idea that Muslim women represent themselves first, before their religion or nation. The piece evokes a tension between tradition and modernity and uses video as a powerful tool for direct storytelling.
