Amalie Atkins, Brian Cauley, Kathryn Ruppert-Dazai and Ellyn Walker: As Perennial as the Grass
C Magazine, Spring 2014, no. 121, pp. 59-61
This article is a review of the show As Perennial as the Grass, which exhibited at the Elora Centre for the Arts from October 19-December 14 2013. This show, consisting of works by four Canadian artists, centred around the idea of love, and included a video installation by Amalie Atkins entitled Embrace (2011). In the video, two elderly twin sisters, dressed like little girls, walk towards each other on a dusty prairie road. They hug repeatedly, in the Austrian tradition of touching shoulders and foreheads. The piece exudes humbling awkwardness and vulnerability, but ultimately displays the bond of familial love.
