The Voice as Uncanny Index in Susan Hiller's The Last Silent Movie
Art Journal, Summer 2013, v. 72, no. 2, pp. 6-15
Kokoli examine’s Susan Hiller’s The Last Silent Movie, paying particular attention to the indexical nature of the work. The Last Silent Movie is a curated assemblage of found sound recordings of endangered and extinct languages; layered on top are visual etchings showing the waveforms of the recorded sound. Kokoli compares the recorded voice to the photographic image and describes it as an index of a body that once was, highlighting the ephemeral character of human presence.
