M: Stories of Women: Shelley Niro
M: Stories of Women, Oct 2011
Curator Sally Fraser describes Shelley Niro's photo exhibition at Gallery 44 in Toronto. Fraser cites the idea of photography as an instrument of visual colonization and applies it to the Canadian aboriginal context.
Frater notes how Niro's work underscores that which is conventionally perceived as inconsiquential and to reveal the importance of ritual, touch, memory and community in sustaining the self. M: Stories of Women confronts recent issues surrounding the Native community in Canada. The M in the title is intentionally ambiguous.
