"Situações-Limites": the emergence of video art in Brazil in the 1970s

A history of the emergence of Brazilian video art, informed and mediated by varying levels of political repression. The article highlights the works of prominent Brazilian video artists: Anna Bella Geiger, Lygia Clark, Sonia Andrade, and Leticia Parente. The Brazilian conventions of production and presentation are discussed. The author notes the theme of liberation from inner repression in a time and place where commentary on political repression was not possible.
