This interview with Cree artist Kent Monkman primarily addresses his role as the grand marshal for the 2017 edition of the Toronto Pride Parade. In the piece, Monkman explains that he took the role in order to heighten the visibility of Indigenous communities during Canada 150 as a means of counteracting the inherently colonial nature of that celebration, which was running concurrently with Pride that year.
