Pastoral Idyll
Moving Image Review & Art Journal (MIRAJ), 2016, v. 5, no. 1&2, pp. 246-254
A review of Guy Sherwin's film-performance work Paper Landscape, by Dan Hays. Although the work was produced in 1975 and presented at Tate Britain, the artist continues to restage it for contemporary audiences. After a brief introduction of the work, the author analyzes the techniques of painted and filmic illusionism in the piece. Referencing scholars such as Laura Mulvey, Sigmund Freud, Laura U. Marks, Anne Friedberg, and T.J. Clark, the author examines the work in terms of its medium in relation to its conceptual context, and the viewing experience from the audience perspective.
