Two Platitudes for Doug Ischar

by Sholem Krishtalka

Toronto: Vtape, 2013

Sholem Krishtalka dives into the temporal world of Doug Ischar, beginning with interruptions of time, the past, the present. Ischar's work transcends the jump of time between 1985 and 2009. Krishtalka insists it is a jump, not an ellipsis. Ischar's work does not revolve around the years in between the beginning and the present, but instead misses them completely in favour of showcasing a striking difference between then and now.

"Sex is dangerous", repeated in this essay, highlights the history of sex education and LGBTQ+ relationships. The work brings this idea into play through sex parties, Robert Mapplethorpe photographs, and theatrical wrestlers.
