Canned Chance

by Emily Falvey

Ottawa: Available Light Screening Collective, 2002

Brochure for a screening curated by Emily Falvey dealing with the themes of randomness and chance.

"The videos that make up this screening have been assembled according to my understanding of a phrase used by Marcel Duchamp to describe three random measurements that he made by letting a metre of thread fall from a height of one metre onto a horizontal plane. These uneven lengths, which he called the Three Standard Stoppages, were conceived as a way to address the idea of chance, which is at once a spontaneous and consistent element of our lives. He called this procedure 'canned chance'". (Quote taken from brochure.)
