Material Girls
Regina: Dunlop Art Gallery, 2015
ISBN 978-1-910433-30-0
Catalogue produced in conjunction with the traveling exhibition MATERIAL GIRLS, which "features critical essays by the exhibition's three co-curators, a specially-commissioned artist project by Tricia Middleton, and 76 full-colour photographs" (quote taken from Regina Library's website). Description of the exhibition: "Material Girls is about women taking up space. This large-scale group exhibition brings together Canadian and international emerging, mid-career, and senior female artists from across artistic disciplines and cultural backgrounds. Uniting these works is an exploration of material process and notions of excess as they relate to the feminized body, gendered space, and capitalist desire. Sumptuous, decorative, and visually overwhelming, the exhibition space becomes a horror vacui, a jubilant and visceral counterpoint to the modernist-derived and ideologically-constructed convention of the austere white cube" (quote taken from Dominique Rey's website). The exhibition toured to five institutions between January 2015 and December 2017 including the Dunlop Art Gallery (where the exhibition opened), the Doris McCarthy Gallery at the University of Toronto, Contemporary Calgary and the College Art Galleries at the University of Saskatchewan, and Rodman Hall Art Centre, at Brock University in Saint Catherines, Ontario.
