Booklet for Creative Super 8 Films, a screening series which took place at the Embassy of Canada in The Hague between May and June 2003.

Roughly translated from the back cover: "Because of the ever-improving digital video systems available, directors who previously shot their films on the beautiful 35mm material can no longer resist the temptation and switch to the handy video camera. Film, the real celluloid, seems to be falling out of favour. But if that were the case, wouldn't 16mm and Super 8 (the old family films) have disappeared from the picture long ago? Nothing could be further from the truth: there are still filmmakers who choose Super 8 or found film material (found footage) on 16mm to make their films. Why this choice was made quickly becomes clear when watching the program Starting From Scratch: the graininess of the image, the full colours, the cinematic effects and the authentic atmosphere that the old material exudes cannot be approached with digital video. Not all Super 8/found footage filmmakers are material purists. Many are inspired by the cross-pollination of techniques: often the filmed or found footage is transferred to video, the computer is used in the editing and the end result is put on video. Starting From Scratch offers 58 international no- /low-budget productions, made with Super 8 and/or found footage material, which can be seen in Amsterdam, Groningen, Haarlem, Eindhoven and Nijmegen."
