Self-guided tour booklet for an exhibition held at the Foreman Art Gallery of Bishop's University from March 9 to April 2, 2005. "Time in art has for centuries been related to the concept of permanence. In this age when global events are shared worldwide in real time, contemporary artists have replied by making work that challenges our conventional notion of time. The term 'time-based art' refers to work that is sequenced through time: performance art, kinetic sculpture, installation and sound art, as well as lens-based works such as film, video and slide shows, are all examples. The passage of time is necessary to decode the meaning in time-based work. The experience of duration is particularly heightened by the melding of the viewer's knowledge, personal memories and recollections of prior art encounters. Duration, however, is but one of many ways contemporary artists use time to create significance. The exhibition 'Time Inside the Image' presents a selection of work by Canadian visual artists who, through film, performance and installation, make us question how the element of time has changed the way we read works of art."
