"Their work, fueled by strong social and political beliefs, signals the creation of a new ideology which is highly personal and political, unlike the collective tribal response proclaimed during the sixties. Their art has emerged during the complex transition from modernism to post-modernism, where pluralism and the embracing of "the vernacular idioms of traditional societies" is all the rage." (p. 5)
"A common thread unites the work of the ten [Indigenous] artists presented in this exhibition. It is work that insists on the right to speak with one's own voice rather than be defined by the dominant culture or even by one's own tribal traditions. Using techniques of collage, assemblage, and installation, the artists juxtapose fragments of the past and present, the political and spiritual, the urban and the natural environment in ways that create new definitions of continuing [Indigenous] culture." (p. 27)
