LATIN AMERICAN SPEAKERS SERIES: CONVERSATION WITH YOSHUA OKÓN @VTape

Co-presented with Sur Gallery, moderated by Noor Alé

Thursday, February 13, 2020  7pm

Vtape presents a program by guest curators Noor Alé and Claudia Mattos. This is a return for the curatorial duo we first worked with in 2017 when they presented a special edition of the Curatorial Incubator All Is well on the border, a collection of video works that contend with life on the margins. LAW & (DIS)ORDER continues their trajectory of social engagement with a program of works that examine the interactions between artists and various forms of political control. They write:

LAW & (DIS)ORDER brings together a group of artists who highlight ruptures in the relationship between police and the people they are sworn to protect. Namely, the works call attention to abuses of power or corruptions in the ways that the law is enforced. The works all bring light to these issues performatively, and many of the performances—exhibited as videos—outline the often bureaucratic absurdity of police corruption through the use of humor or parody. Ultimately, the works deal with the very serious issues of police corruption and violence in a way that does not sensationalize or trivialize these matters but offers a different, and perhaps more accessible, point of entry into a widely-cast discussion about ethics and reform.”

Vtape is publishing a long-form essay by Noor Alé and Claudia Mattos that develops the ideas arising from LAW AND (DIS)ORDER. It will be available at the opening.

Noor Alé and Claudia Mattos have been working with the Toronto video archive and non-profit Vtape since 2016. Together, they curated the exhibition All is well on the border titled after the 1997 Akram Zaatari documentary: influenced by the Syrian crisis, the exhibition explored border zones and political exile through video. All is well on the border was presented by Vtape in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the Images Festival.

Claudia Mattos is a curator and writer who most recently served as Assistant Curator of Media Arts and Live Events at the Baltimore Museum of Art, where she curated exhibitions of Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin, and the New York art collective DIS.
