Vtape is hiring! Technical & Collections Manager

Starting annual salary range: $40,000 – $44,000, commensurate with skills and experience. Health benefits provided upon successful completion of probationary period.

Vtape makes its catalogue of more than 6,800 historical and contemporary video works—encompassing video art, innovative documentaries, experimental animation, video installations and more — available to a client base of galleries and museums, festivals, educational institutions, screening programs, curators, scholars, and diverse public audiences around the world. Vtape also presents public programming, houses a publicly accessible research collection, provides training opportunities for emerging cultural workers, and offers expert technical services in video and audio restoration and digitization. Currently, the organization is seeking to hire an experienced, focused and productive individual to fill the role of Technical & Collections Manager at Vtape. The selected candidate will work closely with other Vtape staff, and their duties and responsibilities will include:

  • overall responsibility for Vtape’s collections of physical media (tapes, disks, hard drives) and digital files;
  • oversight of our technical suite, including arranging for any needed equipment repairs, upgrades, replacements or additions;
  • updating on-site digital backups and off-site LTO backups of all video files;
  • restoration and digitization of a range of materials from many analogue and digital video and audio sources;
  • working with restoration and digitization clients, including invoicing;
  • file processing and basic file editing;
  • support to Vtape’s distribution operations through file processing and delivery, production of DVDs and Blu-ray discs, etc.
  • booking and preparing exhibition equipment rental items for pick-up and checking them upon return; invoicing for equipment rentals;
  • support for Vtape’s public programming through compilation of video programs, assistance with installations, etc.

The successful candidate will have knowledge and experience with analogue and digital media formats and playback devices; some experience in the organization and management of collections; some relevant post-secondary education; an interest in and knowledge of media arts; and will have good general knowledge of contemporary art practices. Excellent organizational capacities, written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to work both independently and as part of a team are critical. Any formal training in media technology, digitization, and collections management would be a definite asset. A significant level of computer literacy is a must. Fluency in English (written and oral) is a requirement; proficiency in French would be an asset. Experience in repair of electronic devices would be valuable.

Software and web platforms in routine use at Vtape include Trello, FileMaker Pro, WordPress, Final Cut, G Suite, and CineSend (cloud file storage and file-sharing). Knowledge and experience with any of these applications is an asset, but training will be provided where needed.
