A derelict abandoned settler-house, perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, is the subject of The Quoddy Fold. For the period of a year Phillips engaged in an ontological dialogue with the disintegrating house. Progressing to a dramatic and inevitable conclusion, The Quoddy Fold contemplates dwelling, human detritus and the nature of impermanence. Poetically framing cultural and societal anxieties surrounding loss, she responds to structures and houses. Working through movement, intention and kinesthetic empathy, Phillips tests and explores the boundaries, thingness and intersubjectivity of space, place and species. Shot over a period of a year we watch as Phillips arrives (dazed after a year of cancer treatment) to begin the task of… what was she going to do? Always surprising, the house offers endless opportunities to contemplate dwelling and passing, the meaning of stuff and the nature of impermanence.
