Bagujan (The One Who Remains in Luck)

Helen Haig-Brown

The Tsilhqot’in believe that a hunter must follow strict protocol to maintain luck. Through the avoidance of certain energies and the following of respectful guidelines, a hunter will be given the gift of not being sensed by the animals, allowing them to stalk an animal closely. If the hunter’s luck is out of balance, an animal will sense them before the hunter gets close enough to see the animal.

In Bagujan, the voice of Tsilhqot’in elder and hunting master, Martin Quilt, guides us through how to remain with hunting luck. The hunters protocol and respect are contemporarily shadowed by Timothy, one of the youngest practicing traditional Tsilhqot’in hunters. As we follow Timothy on a hunt, the struggle of animal scarcity becomes apparent. Subtly, Timothy reveals the contemporary issues of logging, foreign game hunters, and newly developed highways, blurring the line of traditional belief and contemporary impact on a hunters luck.
