PORTAL includes a single ever-changing video image projected on a large constructed sculptural “set” – a series of thin fabric veils, an archway, and a doorway made of strips of lace and sheer muslin. Portal creates a scenario in which the viewer engages with and literally enters the video image. The projected images, reminiscent of natural cellular or visceral elements, appear to advance forward, reinforcing the sensation of being surrounded or engulfed as the viewer proceeds through the space. Benches placed at the front and rear of the installation encourage contemplation within the installation. The piece explores the fertility of the threshold, the place of transition: a site for the viewer to linger between a previous way of structuring time, awareness, even identity, and moving forward into a new or different path. The soundrack, with handbells and a string quartet, mirrors the pace and ephemeral nature of the images.
