In the form of a visual & written poetic letter, Hoa is dedicated to my bà nội, from me, a Vietnamese grandchild.
In Vietnamese, “hoa” means flower. It also is the first name of the filmmaker's bà nội (paternal grandmother). Before developing her memory disorders, the director's grandmother Tuyết Hoa wrote an autobiographical book about her life and its events. She read this book everyday in her Hanoi home in the summer of 2022.
The casualties of the Vietnam War affects Vietnamese peoples’ lives to this day. But the country that the young director knows today is entirely different from the nation his elders knew. As the Vietnamese youth are constantly creating new subcultures & communities, it’s crucial to not forget the bodies that brought them here, and the bodies that never got to grow old. In the form of a poetic letter, as he spends his last month with his grandmother, this short film is dedicated to her from a grieving Vietnamese grandchild.
Collectively revealing themselves in more subtle or conscious ways, in the fleeting moments captured, in the lingering knowing of what remains when someone, or some memory has passed on, the images and words attempt to survive and become memories.
