The Skin of Things takes place within the realm of the dream and the subconscious. It is a poetic representation of intimacy and love in the age of AIDS - of the fear of contact, of imprisonment in an infected body, and of the need for physical contact. We see black and white images of someone sleeping; and handwritten notes, apparently from a diary, of which only fragments are actually legible. As if to emphasize a different dimension, the skin of the hands and that of the sleepers is drenched in a fluid - evocative of the amniotic fluid surrounding embryos in the uterus. Feverish dream or nightmare? A face is bound round with rope, hands grip each other tightly,... Clenched fists, a shot of wrestling on a rumpled up bed. Faces that kiss each other... Snatches of text about the trials of imprisonment, about insomnia: So itchy and stressed: it took forever to fall asleep'.
