Winners and Losers is created using original video footage recorded by Paul Wong. This work shines a light on a piece of recent Vancouver history that many would prefer to forget: the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoff riots. The video puts together recordings of gatherings in the downtown core in and around the hockey arena; these recordings of crowds "celebrating" were made before, during and after several playoff games between the Vancouver Canucks vs Boston Bruins. Winners and Losers is a study of crowd euphoria that blurs behaviours pre and post winning or losing games. The Boston Bruins beat the Canucks 4-0 in Game 7.

Two side-by-side, picture-in-pictures depict winners on the left screen and losers on the right screen. The background is an abstracted image of the highlights of Game 7. The audio overlays the three ambient sounds of the three visual components, the sync sounds of the street crowd recordings with the hockey commentator's voice and arena crowd reactions.

This is the second iteration of
Winners and Losers. The first was a site-specific video mapping event projected onto the façade of the Vancouver Art Gallery, North Plaza. This location was the site of the riots in 2011, in which the Vancouver Police stood down and retreated. Hockey is Canada's national sport. It is an over-hyped corporate and media spectacle.
