The title Am I Mourning What I Never Lost? refers to the mundanities of living with a permanent hearing loss from birth, therefore never having technically “lost” anything. Artist R. James Edwards documents his experience with the medical system and the ways his disability is viewed and grieved for by outsiders through poetry. The audio for this video was recorded by taping a pair of hearing aids to the microphone of the camera, creating distorted audio effects and feedback, as well as incorporating the start up sounds and volume-adjustment beeps as the hearing aids turn on. The captions at the bottom of the screen give vague descriptions of the background sounds but are not effective enough to be useful, as is often the issue with captions. Instead, speech is depicted through fast-paced flashing words which cover parts of the visuals. The words of the poem refer to medical concerns associated with the artist’s hearing loss, everyday differences in sensory experience, the grief and guilt he is expected to have for the disabled body he was born with, and the much more neutral and mundane reality and sense of self he actually deals with.
