Echo Chambers presents three chapters of video collage constructed entirely from Instagram's algorithmically-suggested content. The work functions as a digital self-portrait, documenting the recursive feedback loop between personal influence and algorithmic manipulation where the act of collecting material fundamentally alters what the algorithm subsequently recommends.
Beginning with seemingly benign suggestions that reflect my initial personal tastes, the algorithm gradually amplifies sensational and radicalized content as it interprets my collecting behavior as genuine engagement. This bidirectional influence reveals how recommendation systems both respond to and actively shape our preferences, creating a feedback loop where the algorithm limits my exposure while curating my options, ultimately molding the very tastes it claims to serve.
The methodology becomes self-disrupting: my systematic collection of suggested videos interferes with the algorithm's ability to accurately profile my preferences. The platform begins suggesting content based on my role as collector rather than consumer, creating a strange meta-portrait of someone whose primary activity is gathering algorithmic suggestions. The resulting digital self portrait traces this evolution from mundane recommendations to increasingly polarized content, exposing how quickly platforms can transform personal tastes through controlled exposure, turning passive consumption into compulsive engagement.
