Who are HONGKONG 47? They are a group of democratic advocates charged with conspiracy to commit subversion under the Hong Kong national security law. The 47 individuals are legislators, political leaders, activists, social workers, medical and legal professionals, union leaders, academics and journalists. They were only involved in a peaceful primary public poll for Legislative Council Election, which called for realizing universal suffrage in Hong Kong. The 2020 poll was supported by over 600,000 Hongkongers who came out to vote. Most of the 47 individuals have been denied bail, and are undergoing LENGTHY PRE-TRIAL DETENTION of 2 years now! Some have been subjected to solitary confinement. They are tried WITHOUT JURY by 3 judges designated by the China-appointed chief executive of Hong Kong The most severe punishment is LIFE IMPRISONMENT Besides the charged 47, over 10,000 individuals have been arrested and about 3,000 prosecuted since the 2019 unrest in Hong Kong. The prosecution and trials are going on everyday.
