"This tape illustrates numerous alternative 'squatting' organizations in Berlin. Our intention was to examine how the alternative community, under pressure due to housing shortages, lack of space and funding, succeeded in creating a number of community services without the government's support. The first organization represented is "Heile Haus" (Healing House), an alternative natural medicine hospital constructed in a squatted building. It offers free medical services to the ghetto community, to people without health insurance, and to those injured in demonstrations who cannot go to state hospitals; the second is the "Kinderbahnhof, a children's zoo created by squatters beside the Berlin Wall on an empty lot that they occupied and regenerated. The rest of the tape examines the conflict between police and squatters, with stock footage of riots and evicted squatters living in tents." -P.B.
