Pearl is an intimate documentary-style portrait of a woman, taped over the course of five years. The relationship began at a Toronto women's hostel in 1979 and resumed in 1982. After a one year hiatus, taping continued over a twelve month period in 1983-84.
An eccentric figure, Pearl inhabits a larger world than that immediately surrounding her. She has a keen awareness of current affairs gleaned from newspaper and books, which is processed into topical monologues. Her ideas flow in a stream of free associations punctuated by spoonerisms, she remains an enigma. The work unfolds like a memoir loosely edited from diaries.
