Out Damn Spot

Kathy Tanney

1987, 02:00 minutes, colour, English

In "the industry" they are called "spots", an apt term for the impression they leave - like a branding iron - in the viewer. Through TV, the notion of a collective unconscious has been redefined. Through this collection of recreated "trigger" images from commercials, the artist attempts to wash her mind, making room for more important stuff. It is, if you will, an attempted exorcism.
