Former East / Former West

Shelly Silver

1994, 63:00 minutes, colour, German with Eng.St

Since the end of the Cold War, the meanings associated with the words east and west have been undergoing a rapid transformation from the point of view of the people living in Berlin, a city at the centre of these changes. Made up of hundreds of street interviews chronicling definitions of such words as home, nationality, democracy, socialism, history and freedom, Former East/Former West builds a complex view of how Berliners are redefining what they believe in and who they identify with. As people talk with remarkable candour about the recent changes in the borders of their city, they raise the question that most of the countries of the world are now facing, that of who belongs and who doesn't.
