Daughter / Elocution Lesson

This short video uses the single image of an Asian girl skipping. This gesture is slowed and repeated throughout. The footage is taken from a home movie that has its history in a different time and place; Johannesburg in the sixties. The Cantonese voiceover is the only audio and even though it may not be understood by certain viewers it creates a melancholy tone that gives the image its meaning, located in feelings of longing, the need for memory and history. The english subtitles address the notion of what it is to be excluded and displaced because of language.
