On the Outside

Don Bouzek

1993, 21:25 minutes, colour, English

On the Outside addresses housing issues facing young people. Developed through workshops in Metro hostels, women's shelters, drop-ins and supportive housing, the tape presents four dramatic scenarios based on stories participants identified as important. A rough tape was created during a workshop with KYTES, a 'street kids' performing ensemble. This tape was shown at the original workshop locations, and the feedback from these sessions defined the final shooting script. The tape can either be viewed in its entirety, or used as "triggers", being stopped after each session for a group discussion supported by educational materials developed by Housing Equality for Youth, a community advocacy group. On the Outside emphasizes concrete actions that people can take to fight for their rights.
