Walking Around

Kinga Araya

1998, 01:30 minutes, colour, English

Walking Around was indirectly inspired by my frequent personal displacements that had been occurring since I left Poland, in 1988. Since then I have lived in Italy, Canada and in Texas.

While metaphorically 'walking through' different languages, cultures and countries, this particular video expresses the basic desire in going 'beyond' while being still here, in the middle 'of a becoming space'.
I wrote a short narrative/poetry for this video two years ago in a plane, while flying back from Amsterdam to Toronto. The video's poetic mode elevates the experience of a proverbial 'walking in circles' to a contemplative, quasi religious meditation.

I found the semi-deserted place in the middle of Texas, Palo Duro, to be a perfect location for my 'walking around' while incessantly and compulsively searching for an idea of home.
