Vive la DifferAnce
1999, 03:00 minutes, colour, English
This is a Lacan feminist sexual experiment. Vive explores our sexual Eden in a time before language where there are no genders at the same time as our Mutter, Mere, Mother is our uninhibited object of desire. I use three languages - German, Quebecois, French and English along with a dominatrix as a sublimation for mother to invoke this punishable paradise.
Vive la DifferAnce is a title of shibboleth in reverse. DifferAnce can be translated into English from French to mean both difference and deferral. Gender is never truly present, but is only referenced through the compliment of referring to the other gender's lack. I made woman first and man reflect the absent signifier. Vive tries to capture that time before the unheard voice - the song before the law, before words split our identities, before symbolic reappropriation into language, before the metonymic displacement of desire into a paternal order, before the authority that separates us from our most ancient hungers. Vive straddles this threshold place of pre-Oedipal desire that should only be remembered by a monster that needs punishment.
