Corporate Lockdown is a 22 minute documentary examining the role of prisons in society as a private corporation enters into the management of an Ontario adult correctional facility.
Corporate Lockdown takes you from Penatanguishene, Ontario, site of the new privately run megajail, where the majority of the community is against private prison operators; to Nashville, U.S.A., home of Metro-Davidson County Detention Centre, a privately-run prison, operated by the second largest private prison operator in the world, Corrections Corporation of America.
The viewer also gets an inside look at the American Correctional Association Winter Conference Exhibitors Hall. The Exhibitors Hall showcases new technologies available to the prison industry among other wares and brashly illustrates the commercial end of the prison industry.
A correctional worker from Barrie, Ontario explains how the private prison management of the Penatanguishene jail will change his profession. Interspersed throughout is the story of an ex-offender and his journey through the publically run Ontario criminal justice system.
My intention in making Corporate Lockdown was to contribute to the current discussion about the privatization of the first adult correctional facility in Canada. I believe that the debate is misleading; the criminal justice system is not working as per it’s mandate; to keep communities safer or to rehabilitate offenders – whether it is privately run or publically operated. Corporate Lockdown takes a deeper look at the real agenda behind the increasingly global prison industrial complex.
