In the wide expanses and heat of Texas, the car, and the personal freedom it stands for, are the law of the land. Horsepower takes you for a ride on the inside of Austin, Texas dyke scene, in a series of portraits about women and the pick-ups, cars, and trucks that they drive.
Independent, resourceful, honest, flirtatious and wacky, these gals love their cars. In these candid encounters, women introduce you to their vehicles - from the names that they call them (Reba, Red, Christine and Big Blue), trinkets on the dashboard and the music on the radio to the bumper stickers that may get them into trouble with police and rednecks.
Through their cars we learn about what it means to be a dyke in a materialist and macho culture. Visually and verbally these women construct out of their vehicles an image which reflects their own beliefs and fantasies about who they are and the world they live in. Horsepower is a testament to both the butch they reclaim from Texan culture and the vapid materialism which they imbue with new personal mythologies.
