In 1957 American psychologist Harry Harlow began developing theories on the "Nature of Love". He removed baby monkeys from their mothers, to gain insight into the workings touch has on "normal" development. Johannes Brahms favorite subject was also unquestionably love, and Brahms set out to compose the love poetry and songs of common folk, in the form of the Lieder. From Brahms, & Norman to Muybridge and Harlow, Die Trauernde sets the moving image to song, in an anthem to the unloved.
